Coraline and Other Stories - Neil Gaiman

Coraline steps through a door in her house, into another mirrored world, a more sinister world, where she is trapped and needs to find her parents and her way home.  In his other stories we meet a sinister Jack in the Box, a stray cat who does a nightly battle with the Devil, and a group of men who go out to capture the Sunbird.

Read - Because, i love the Coraline film, and i have started to enjoy Neil Gaiman's work.

What a great little collection of Stories.  Its hard to review a set of stories because i enjoyed them all in their own little way. Coraline unfortunately i was spoilt by the film, by making a film from a short story you need to pad it out. So their was characters missing and the story had changed somewhat into the film. Therefore because i have seen and loved the film many times i just couldn't take the step backwards into the original book. Although i do see where the merits lie and i could see myself enjoying it more if i had not been spoilt by the film.

The other short stories in here were very good, being the younger target audience this book is set out for i would have defiantly found them creepy, no i lie I did find some of them creepy.  Their are some absolute gems of stories in this one and i love the way he writes them, incorporating realism with a twist of fantasy and the monsters under your bed.  Some stories didn't really end which is slight frustrating as you get a glimpse into this magical world and you want to continue to delve into it. (Im not sure if they are part of other longer novels, i know one was an extract from one but I'm not sure about the others.)

What a great collection of short stories, diving you into a world of childhood fears, of ghosts and and demons. A great book for young teens and adults alike.
