The Book Thief - Markus Zusak

Its 1939 Nazi Germany and death has never been so busy.  This novel focuses from the view point of Death who follows the life of a book thief. Liesil is nine year old girl who gets left with a foster family during the war. She steals books.  We follow her life through War ridden Germany, her foster family, her best friend and neighbour Rudy, and the Jew living in the basement.  A poignant tale about the life's of one family and how they were affected by the war.

A Fantastic Book

Read - Because it looked interesting.

I loved this story so gripping and almost realistic. This book started off a bit strange as you get to hear the story from deaths point of view (but i was expecting it to get better from reading reviews about it), and it did get better. We basically follow this small girl who is left with a foster family and their lives in Nazi Germany. She is a book thief but that is more of a sideline and a guideline to her life. We watch her grow up and learn from the world around her as the country falls deeper and deeper into the war.

What i loved about the story is it felt realistic, we all know about the War, but we don't always see it from a German point of view. It is well researched and easy to follow. Its not always happy endings which i liked in this story as you know it wasn't going to be. Zusak really did get to the heart of the family living in Germany at this time and managed to create realistic characters and very moving plot lines.  His style of writing, although strange in some parts but which also makes this book unique, is very easy to follow and very hard to put down.

Despite being quite a sad, its a very beautiful story. Its very well written and very interesting to read. I would definitely recommend reading this story.
