The Book Thief - Markus Zusak


Its 1939 Nazi Germany and death has never been so busy.  This novel focuses from the view point of Death who follows the life of a book thief. Liesil is nine year old girl who gets left with a foster family during the war. She steals books.  We follow her life through War ridden Germany, her foster family, her best friend and neighbour Rudy, and the Jew living in the basement.  A poignant tale about the life's of one family and how they were affected by the war.

Scott Pilgrim Series - Bryan Lee O'Malley


Scott Pilgrim Series, is a set of Six novels, each one depicting Scott Pilgrim and his friends and his journey to conquer his new girlfriend Ramona's Seven Evil Ex's.  Scott is a 23 year old, he has no job, he lives with his Gay flatmate, and he plays in a band Sex Bob-omb.  We follow his life whilst he's defeating these ex's and we get to meet all his friends and even some of their friends in this humorous comic.

Coraline and Other Stories - Neil Gaiman




Coraline steps through a door in her house, into another mirrored world, a more sinister world, where she is trapped and needs to find her parents and her way home.  In his other stories we meet a sinister Jack in the Box, a stray cat who does a nightly battle with the Devil, and a group of men who go out to capture the Sunbird.

When the animals of Manor Farm get fed up of being over worked and not well looked after by their farmer, they create a revolution to take over the farm. The animals are now in charge, they have their own rules, and they eventually form their own hierarchy. What ensues is a vivid description of how power corrupts and leaves the animals in no better a position then when they were under the rule of the humans.

The Bookseller of Kabul - Asne Seierstad

Asne Seierstad travelled to Afghanistan to find out about the conflicts and struggles that the country was facing, and stumbled across a bookseller. She asked if she could join his family and write about their history.  She moved in with the family of thirteen and as an outsider and a woman could move freely between different members and follow different people's stories, about their lives living in Kabul during times of conflict and war.

Enigma - Robert Harris



March 1943, the war hangs in the balance.  Jericho is sent for to crack the code from the German U Boats using the Enigma machine.  A task he has done before but was sent on leave due to a break down.  However he is the only one who can potentially crack the code. He returns to Bletchley Park, and discovers a new mystery on his doorstep, his former girlfriend has gone missing and their may be a spy inside Bletchley.
