Your Next Door Neighbour is a Dragon is a guided tour of some of the weird subcultures of the internet. Delve into a world and meet doomsday cultists, human hamburgers and people who fall in love with cartoons. A world where your next door neighbour is a dragon, your mailman is some sort of wizard and your wife wants to get eaten by a muppet.
Why read - I saw this at the local library and it looked intriguing, as I am always reading blogs on the weird and wonderful at home, i thought this might satisfy some curiosities.
This book was not as i was expecting, i think what i thought this book would be would be short snippets of information, short stories of subcultures and weird 'clips' from around the internet. However the narrater takes you on a journey and introduces you to one or two of the weirder subcultures. All these subcultures are related in one way or another and only gives you one small glance of the weird of the internet.
I think Parsons is trying to be engaging and humorous, but it does feel forced in this book. I found the writing style not to my taste and some areas being put off what he finds entertaining news. Some of the information he presents is interesting, and one or two things i did have a quick search to investigate the information further. However he does broach the internet from a fresh angle instead of giving you the stories from the web, he actually visits the people and tries to find out about the people behind the stories.
Overall I think i was disappointed by the book, and did not have the interest or the humour i would have liked from this book.
