It took a year to drag myself out of the mess. A year in which I lost my dearest friend and then promptly lost my way. A year in which I ran away overseas, came back and then ran away again. A year in which I learnt to let go, learnt to forgive and learnt to grow up. It was a big year. It was a lot of work. And I head-butted two people. Accidentally.
Lessons in Letting Go is an honest, uproariously funny and sometimes moving memoir of the year in which Corinne Grant decides to do something about her hoarding. From every scrunchie she's ever owned, to every pencil case and magazine, it's time for it all to go. Problem is, getting rid of the stuff turns out to be much harder than she initially thought. This delightful memoir is about hoarding and about how the things we hold on to can end up dictating our lives. Warm, funny, candid and insightful, Lessons in Letting Go is about the pain - but also the necessity and the joy - in learning to let go.
Why Read - Another one lent to me by a friend, it looked interesting and was told it was quite funny.
This delightful book is a great insight into how clutter and things can take over our lives. Although Corinne Grant, takes this one stage further than most. Not being able to let go of anything she owns makes her a young hoarder - something we usually associate with the older generation. However when writing this book she can pinpoint why and how this obsession came about and how she slowly got over it. She is a great writer and this book is really witty throughout. You can easily relate to her personality and sympathise (somewhat) with her plight. She explains her reasoning and rational really well within this story and it is a great read.
Its good to relate to, as we all must step outside our comfort zones once in a while, and she puts these moments so spectacularly in writing that you know you would have felt this way before (and your not the only one who has thought like this). Most of the way through the book you think to yourself get some help, but she does this in her own way. By getting away from it all, and having holidays where her lessons in life come from meeting people and seeing how others live spurs her into doing something for herself which is a really useful way of doing things.
I thought this book was great, it was insightful, interesting and very funny. Easy to read, gripping and a great take on life, written from a very frank point of view. Hoping to use some of the hints and tips she uses to 'let go' in my own life, makes me realise that we can all learn from her crazy.
