Azumanga Daioh - Kiyohiko Azuma

An omnibus of four comics in one. This four-panel comedy chronicles the everyday lives of six very quirky high school girls. Meet the child prodigy Chiyo, the animal-loving Sakaki, the spacey out-of-towner Osaka, the straight-laced Yomi and her best friend Tomo, and the sports-loving Kagura throughout their high school lives. With its strong cast of characters and punchy dialogue, Azumanga Daioh has become one of the most widely-recognized books in the market, not to mention the first four-panel comic from Japan to gain wide popularity in the U.S.

Why Read - I have wanted to get into Manga, and comics and have read a few this year so far. This was another my friend (who is a Liberian) brought home for me to sample.

Although these four comics don't really have a plot or even sometimes a sense of follow on story these manga strips follow a group of high school students and the many adventures they get up to.  The strips don't necessary follow on from each other but give a snapshot of life at a Japanese high school, and a helpful glossary at the back of each book incase your not sure of the references made. The comics themselves are funny, well drawn and very cute. The cats who are referenced through out the story are one of the highlights of the book.  Great comic strip for a very amusing read.
