Why read- As part of the challenge I am trying to read a wide range of books from all genres. This is one Mark recommended as one to read, and its a genre I would usually not touch.
I enjoyed this book, more than I thought and I'm glad i was given the opportunity to try this new genre of reading. The book is split into three distinct sections, the first we talk about the the boys as children, growing up and learning from each other. Then for the second part it takes a dramatic twist and for some reason not explained we only focus on one boy. This annoyed me somewhat as although i am aware he is probably talked about in another one of Smith's books I would have liked some explanation or reason to why he is ignored. Especially after a big set up. For me the third section - the wrapping up of the story as it were, felt a little unnecessary and dragged out. It changed pace again and i felt myself skimming through this to get the gist of the story. It would have been much nice to round it up earlier as the point he did finish was a bit of a disappointment. It felt like it was neither left on a cliff hanger or on a conclusion, and was a bit cut short.
Aside from this, and the fact the story was nothing like what I expected. It was a good book, it kept me enthralled, it had a good pace to the writing style and it was both easy to read and had enough depth to it. You could tell it was written from a Male perspective for the lack of depth of emotions, which were only brushed upon. But this was almost refreshing from the other books I have read.
I really enjoyed this book, and have heard this series is one of his better ones. So i think i will defiantly be reading the next in the series in the near future. I am really glad this book was given to me to read, as its a style and genre I have never read before, but one i enjoyed and gave a change to my usual reading material. Great Read for the Adventure Genre.
