Its 1962, in Jackson Mississippi, where black maids raise white children, but are not trusted not to steal the silver. We follow the lives of several black maids and their interactions with their white masters. As each maid plucks up the courage to step over boundaries and cross lines they should never cross, but the result is an extraordinary tale to tell.
Why Read – I have seen this book around, and it looked really interesting, so when I saw it in a shop I brought it. After buying it several people had further recommended it to me to read it.
It wasn't quite the story I was expecting, the blurb on the back was slightly misleading. However I did quite enjoy the way it was told. Its unusual in the sense you don't find many books that broach this subject and I felt this novel did it sensibly and carefully. Ie she didn't delve into to much detail into the lives of the maid and kept it quite shallow.
The plot itself had me gripped and the more I read it the more I couldn't put it down. Unfortunately I feel I rushed the ending, and I don't think it ended conclusively, it left you on a bit of a cliff hanger. Which was a shame as she was leading up to a nice conclusive ending. The writing style was easy to read and entertaining. You felt she had some knowledge, or done some research into the areas she was describing.
I enjoyed the plot, and the lives of the maid, and thought it was a very well written story. It had me gripped to the end, and would be a book I would recommend to others. It was easy to read, interesting and a little thought provoking. Overall a good book.
