The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. But Katniss has been close to death before - and survival, for her, is second nature. "The Hunger Games" is a searing novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present. Welcome to the deadliest reality TV show ever...

So many people have advised me to read this, and i was desperate to do so just before the film came out (and the spoilers come with it).  Im glad I did, as I Loved this book.

I find something raw and powerful about these genre of teen books, this futurist world with parallels to how life is at the moment. In this novel its a world where every area is split into districts, each district has its purpose. And the governments power is kept fresh by setting up the Hunger games, a game where one girl and boy from each district must fight to the death. The winner - the last one standing.

Its a very dark book in one way, as it is children fighting to kill each other to stay alive. its poignant in its reflection of life as it is and how it could be. Its a gripping novel, one that kept me reading page after page, and not wanting, or able to put it down.  Its well written, with enough twists and turns so you are not sure whats coming next. The idea that it is set in the future gives the writer freedom to create and imagine any scenario she wants.

I loved this book, and I am really looking forward to getting my hands on two and three. Like Harry Potter - this does not feel like a teen only book, and i recommend anyone of any age  should read this book.  Fantastically gripping novel, a great recommendation.
